One Honest Step Forward: Tools, Truth and Real Progress

The Reality Behind the To-Do List
Let’s be honest. Some days, I look at my list and wonder if I’m actually moving forward or just running in circles. If you’re reading this, maybe you know that feeling too. There’s a weird comfort in admitting it—most people don’t. They post the wins, the “crushing it” moments, and leave out the bit where they’re staring at their laptop at 11pm, wondering what to prioritise next.

I’ve been in digital marketing for a while now—long enough to know that progress rarely looks like a straight line. It’s a series of left turns, false starts, and the odd burst of clarity. The Isle of Man is full of small businesses and creatives who feel the same. Some days, it’s all about survival. Others, you hit a genuine breakthrough.

Conversations That Actually Matter
What’s kept me going isn’t just the tech or the tools—it’s the conversations. Real ones. The kind where someone admits they’re stuck, or unsure, or just plain tired. Those moments are gold. They’re the start of real change, not just for my clients, but for me too.

Has your marketing budget had been slashed? Freelancer and no work coming in? Self employed and its either a weekly food shop or pay for the Facebook ad you REALLY need to launch? You feel like you’re out of options. Don’t think tactics right away. Think about about what actually matters to your customers, what’s worked before and what you feel good about doing. Sometimes, the best strategy is just sitting down, with a cuppa and putting pen to paper.
When Budgets Shrink, Creativity Grows
I’ve seen it so many times—when the money dries up, that’s when the best ideas start popping up. It’s almost a rule at this point. You learn to do more with less. You stop chasing every shiny thing and get laser-focused on what actually moves the needle.
For example, one of my favourite ways to stretch a tight budget is to double down on content that’s already working. Repurpose a single post into a reel, a story, a blog and a newsletter. Or, if you’re brave, try something new—like a live Q&A or a behind-the-scenes look at your process. People connect with honesty and momentum, not perfection.
Some Of The Tools I Actually Trust (and Why)
There are a million tools out there, and most of them promise the world. Here’s what I actually use and recommend—because they’ve made a real difference for me and my clients:
  • AI Tools With Alex suite: I built this because I needed it myself. Over 60 tools to help with marketing, creativity, and business admin. It’s saved me (and a few clients) hours every week. No fluff—just things that work.
  • Metricool: If you want to know what’s actually working in your content, this is the one. Track your socials, see what’s clicking and stop guessing.
  • SumUp: For freelancers and small businesses, making payments and bookings easy is a game changer. I use SumUp for  card payments. No faff, just works.
  • Maria Wendt’s 3×9 Formula: Stuck on what to post next? This simple formula has helped me plan content that actually gets engagement, not just likes.
These aren’t sponsored links or affiliate deals. Just afew of the things I trust, use and recommend because they’ve made my life easier.
Simple Wins: Small Steps, Big Results
The biggest lesson I’ve learned in 2025? You don’t need a massive overhaul to see progress. Sometimes, it’s the smallest shift that opens the door to bigger wins.
I worked with someone who’d built their whole business through Facebook—no website, no real visual identity, just word of mouth and posts. It worked for a while, but they hit a wall. We sat down, talked through what made their brand special, and agreed it was time to step things up.
I designed a website from scratch and gave their whole look a serious refresh. Nothing over-the-top—just something that felt true to them and actually showed off what they do. Now, instead of relying on Facebook alone, they’ve got a proper home online. Suddenly, enquiries picked up, new clients started sticking around longer, and sharing their story got a whole lot easier.
If you’re feeling stuck, remember—you don’t need a perfect setup or a big budget to move forward. Sometimes, it’s just about taking that first step, like swapping a Facebook-only presence for a simple website and a brand refresh. That one shift can open doors you didn’t even know were there.
